The bluffing game of the taverns, for two
Liar’s Dice is hundreds of years old and played all over the world: as Dudo or Cacho in South America, in harbour pubs and on the decks of pirate films. The idea fits in one sentence: you can see your own dice, but you bid on everybody’s. Is your friend really holding those fours, or just making you think so?
On BeatMe the dice are shaken on our server and each player sees only their own cup, so nobody can peek. Make a game, send the link in any chat, and play live or one bid at a time. When someone shouts “Liar!”, both cups lift, the dice that count light up one by one, and somebody loses a die. Lose them all and the game is over.
How to play Liar’s Dice
Shake and peek
Both of you shake your dice under a cup. You see your own dice; your friend’s stay hidden.
Bid on all the dice
Say how many dice on the whole table show one face, like “three 4s”. Every bid must go higher: more dice, or the same number of a higher face.
Raise or call “Liar!”
On your turn, bid higher or call the last bid a lie. Both cups lift. Fewer dice than the bid? The bidder loses a die. Enough? The caller loses one.
Keep your last die
The loser of each call starts the next round with one die fewer. Whoever loses their last die loses the game. Rematch on the same link.
The rules in short
- Dice: five each for the classic game, or three each for a quick one.
- Bids count the dice under both cups. A higher bid has more dice, or the same number of a higher face: three 4s, then three 5s, then four 2s.
- Ones are wild (you can switch this off): they count as any face, so they can’t be bid on themselves.
- “Liar!” If there are fewer matching dice than the bid, the bidder loses a die; if there are at least as many, the caller loses one.
- “Spot on!” (optional): claim the bid is exactly right. If it is, your friend loses a die; if not, you do.
- The loser of a call opens the next round. The last player with dice wins.
How to win at Liar’s Dice
Start from what you know. With ones wild, each hidden die shows a given face about one time in three, so against five hidden dice you can expect one or two of any face, plus whatever you hold. A bid far above that is probably a bluff.
Bluff with purpose: bidding on a face you don’t have can push your friend into a bid they can’t back up. And watch the bids: when your friend keeps raising the same face, they may really be holding it. Fewer dice make every call riskier, so the endgame with one die each is pure nerve.
Fair dice, hidden cups
The dice are rolled on our server for every round, and your friend’s dice never reach your phone until a call lifts the cups. Nobody can peek, not even with a clever look at the page. When the game is over, the replay shows both cups for every round, so you can see exactly who was bluffing.
Liar’s Dice FAQ
Can I play Liar’s Dice online with a friend for free?
Yes. Start a game on this page and send the link. Your friend taps it and plays in the browser, with no app, no account and no cost.
Are ones wild in Liar’s Dice?
In the most common rules they are, and that’s our default: a one counts as any face. You can switch wild ones off when you start the game; then ones are a normal face you can bid on.
What does “Spot on” mean?
Instead of calling “Liar!”, you claim the last bid is exactly right. If the count matches the bid exactly, your friend loses a die; if it doesn’t, you lose one. You can switch it off.
Can my friend see my dice?
No. Each player gets only their own dice from our server. The other cup stays closed until somebody calls, and both cups are shown at the end of the game.
How long does a game take?
About five minutes live with five dice each, and two or three with three dice. You can also play one bid at a time: the link stays open for 48 hours after the last move.
