A typing test is more fun with a rival
Typing tests are a classic way to find out how fast you are. On your own, you get a number. Against a friend, you get a race. In Typing Race you start a challenge, send the link, and once your friend has joined you both type exactly the same passage. The faster time wins, and the result shows both speeds in words per minute (WPM) along with your accuracy.
You do not have to be online together. Whoever types second races the ghost of the first player: their recorded run moves along the track in real time, word for word, so you can see if you are ahead or behind as you type. Every passage is written for BeatMe, so nobody has seen it before the race starts.
How to play Typing Race
Send the link
Choose Sprint (about 30 words) or Long (about 60 words), start the challenge and send the short beatme.link link. The race unlocks once your friend has joined.
Press start
Tap Start the race. After a three-second countdown the passage appears and the clock starts. The words stay hidden until then, for both of you.
Type every word exactly
Type into the box below the passage. A word only counts once it is typed exactly, so fix typos as you go. The current word turns red when something is wrong.
Fastest time wins
When you type the last word, your time, WPM and accuracy are saved. Once both of you have finished, the faster time wins, and you can watch the whole race again side by side.
What is a good typing speed?
Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where every five characters, spaces included, count as one word. That keeps results fair between passages with long and short words.
- Around 40 WPM is a typical speed for people who type every day.
- 60 to 80 WPM is fast, and common among people who type for a living.
- Over 100 WPM is exceptional. Only a small group of very practised typists can keep that up.
On a phone, speeds are usually lower than on a keyboard, so for the fairest race, play on the same kind of device. Typing Race shows your accuracy too: the share of keystrokes that were right the first time.
How to type faster
- Accuracy first. Every typo costs time to fix. Typing slightly slower without mistakes usually beats rushing.
- Read ahead. Look at the next word while your fingers finish the current one.
- Stay relaxed. Light, loose fingers move faster than tense ones. On a keyboard, keep your fingers resting on the home row.
- Keep a rhythm. A steady pace beats bursts of speed followed by long pauses.
- Race often. Rematches on the same link are free, and every race uses a new passage.
Fair play
The passage is sent only when you press start, and our server keeps its own clock from that moment. A reported time can never be faster than the server saw, give or take normal network delay, so nobody can fake a time. Copying and pasting is switched off, and runs faster than any person can type are flagged and counted at human speed.
Typing Race FAQ
Is Typing Race free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no download, no account and no purchases. Your friend just taps the link and types in their browser.
Do we both type the same text?
Yes. Both players get exactly the same passage, so the only difference is your speed and accuracy.
Do we have to play at the same time?
No. You can race at the same moment or one after the other. Whoever types second races the first player’s ghost, which replays their run in real time.
How is WPM calculated?
Every five characters, including spaces, count as one word. Your WPM is the number of those words divided by your time in minutes. Because every typo has to be fixed, your WPM always covers the whole passage, typed correctly.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Typing Race works on phones, tablets and computers. Autocorrect is switched off in the typing box. For the fairest race, play on the same kind of device as your friend.
What happens if I reload the page during a race?
Your race continues, but the clock keeps running from the moment you first pressed start, so a reload never gives you a fresh start.
