Challenge a friend

Start the game, then send the link. The first person to accept plays you.

The word

Links stay open 48 hours after the last move.

Two grids of letter tiles in green, yellow and grey, one finished with a full green row

Guess the word, beat your friend

If you like daily word puzzles in the style of Wordle, Word Duel turns them into a head-to-head game. You and your friend get exactly the same secret word. Type a five-letter guess and every letter changes colour: green if it is in the right place, yellow if it is in the word but somewhere else, grey if it is not in the word at all. Six tries to find it.

On BeatMe you play it with a link. Solve your word, send the link, and your friend tries the same word, live or whenever they like. While you play you only see the colours of each other’s guesses, never the letters, and the word stays on our server until you are done. Fewer guesses wins, and a tie goes to the faster solver.

How to play Word Duel

Start and send the link

Pick a surprise word or the word of the day, then guess yours and send the beatme.link link. Your friend gets the same word.

Type a five-letter guess

Use the keyboard on the screen or your own. Press Enter and the tiles flip.

Read the colours

Green: right letter, right place. Yellow: in the word, wrong place. Grey: not in the word. The keyboard keeps track for you.

Fewest guesses wins

Find the word in fewer guesses than your friend. The same number? The faster solver wins. Then copy your grid and share it.

Tips for five-letter word games

  • Start with common letters. A first guess with E, A, R, T, S, O or L tells you the most, whatever the word is.
  • Use new letters on guess two. If the first guess was mostly grey, try five completely different letters before you aim for the answer.
  • Remember double letters. Words like APPLE or GEESE have a letter twice. A green or yellow letter can still appear a second time.
  • Move the yellows. A yellow letter is in the word, just not there. Try it in a new place on the next guess.
  • Think of the endings. In English, many five-letter words end in E, Y, S, ER or ED. Fill the start once the end is clear.

Fair for both

The secret word is chosen on our server and sent to nobody until they have finished: not to the page, not to the other player, not to spectators. Each guess is checked and coloured there too, and the time is measured on the server from your first guess to the solving one.

Word Duel FAQ

Is Word Duel like Wordle?

It is the same kind of five-letter guessing game, made for two: you and a friend get the same secret word and race to solve it in fewer guesses. Word Duel is not affiliated with The New York Times.

Can I play a word game against a friend for free?

Yes. Start a game on this page, solve your word, send the link and your friend plays the same word in their browser. Free, no app, no account.

What is the word of the day?

With “Word of the day”, everyone who starts a challenge today gets the same word, in their language. Rematches then use fresh surprise words.

Which languages can I play in?

English, German, Spanish, French, Turkish and Vietnamese. The word is in the language of the page you start from. Accents are typed without marks.

Who wins?

Whoever solves the word in fewer guesses. With the same number, the faster solver wins. If neither of you finds it in six guesses, it’s a draw.

Can my friend see my letters?

No. Until your friend has finished, they see only the colours of your guesses, never the letters or the word.
