Five dice in a row, all showing six, with a burst of stars

The scorecard dice game, made fair

Five Dice is the dice game many families know as Yahtzee, Kniffel or Yams: throw five dice up to three times a turn, keep the ones you want, and write the result in one of 13 boxes on your scorecard. Three of a kind, a full house, a straight, five of a kind. Every box can be used once, so every turn is a little decision: take the safe points now, or gamble on something better later?

On BeatMe there is a twist no other dice game has: you and your friend get the same dice. Every throw comes from one secret sequence, so if you both keep the same dice, you both get the same throw. Luck is no excuse any more. Start a game, play your card, and send the link: your friend sees your score and tries to beat it with the same dice.

How to play Five Dice

Start and play your card

Type your name and start. You can play your 13 turns right away and send the beatme.link link afterwards, or send it first.

Throw up to three times

Throw all five dice, tap the ones you want to keep, and throw the rest again. You get three throws per turn.

Fill one box per turn

Tap a box and confirm. If the dice don’t fit, you can write a zero, and some turns that is the smart move.

Highest total wins

After 13 turns the card is full. Your friend plays the same dice, and the higher total wins.

The scorecard

  • Ones to sixes: the sum of that number. Get 63 or more in these six boxes for a 35-point bonus (that is three of each).
  • Three of a kind / four of a kind: at least three or four dice the same, worth the sum of all five dice.
  • Full house: three of one number and two of another, 25 points.
  • Small straight: four numbers in a row, 30 points. Large straight: five in a row, 40 points.
  • Five of a kind: all five dice the same, 50 points.
  • Chance: any dice, worth their sum. Perfect for a turn that went wrong.

Tips for a higher score

  • Go for the bonus. Three of each number in the upper boxes earns 35 extra points. Fours, fives and sixes count most.
  • Keep chance for emergencies. A bad turn late in the game hurts less if chance is still open.
  • Zero the hard boxes early. If five of a kind has not come by the last turns, a zero there can save a better box.
  • Same dice, different choices. Because you both get the same throws, every point of difference is a decision. Watch the replay to see where you went another way.

Five Dice FAQ

Can I play Five Dice online with a friend for free?

Yes. Start a game on this page, send the link and your friend plays in their browser. It is free, with no app and no account.

Is this the same as Yahtzee or Kniffel?

It is the same classic five-dice scorecard game with the usual 13 boxes. Yahtzee and Kniffel are brand names; Five Dice is our free version, with the twist that both players get the same dice.

How can both players get the same dice?

Every throw comes from one secret sequence, by turn, throw and die. If you keep the same dice as your friend, the dice you throw again land exactly the same. Different choices lead to different dice.

Can I see the dice coming?

No. Our server throws the dice, and the sequence never reaches your browser. Your friend’s scorecard stays hidden until you have both finished, because it would give away the throws.

Do we have to play at the same time?

No. Each of you plays your own card whenever you like. The link stays open for 48 hours after the last move.

Is there a bonus for a second five of a kind?

No. Each box counts once, five of a kind included, which keeps the scores close and the decisions important.
