A Nine Men’s Morris board of three nested squares with red and yellow stones and a glowing mill

One of the oldest board games, now over a link

Nine Men’s Morris was carved into Roman steps and medieval church benches, and it’s still one of the best games for two: easy enough to learn in a minute, deep enough to keep you thinking. In Germany it’s called Mühle, in Spain Molino, in France Jeu du moulin and in Turkey Dokuz Taş. The idea is always the same: get three stones in a row, a mill, and take one of your opponent’s.

On BeatMe you play it with a link. Start a game, send it in any chat, and your friend plays in the browser. Play live together or one move at a time: every placed stone, every move and every mill plays back when the other one looks again. Moves are checked on our server, so nobody can slide a stone where it isn’t allowed.

How to play Nine Men’s Morris

Place your nine stones

Start a game and send the beatme.link link. Take turns placing one stone at a time on any empty point. You play red, your friend yellow.

Make a mill

Three of your stones on one line make a mill. Every new mill lets you take one of your friend’s stones, but not one that is already in a mill, unless all of theirs are.

Move along the lines

Once all stones are placed, move one stone per turn along a line to the next empty point. Opening a mill and closing it again counts as a new mill.

Fly and win

With only three stones left, yours may fly to any empty point. A player with two stones left, or with no move, loses.

Nine Men’s Morris tips

  • Take the crossings. The middle points of the middle square touch four lines. Stones there have the most moves.
  • Don’t rush into mills. While placing, a mill is nice, but mobility matters more. A player who gets blocked in the moving phase loses.
  • Build a double mill. Two mills that share a stone let you swing one stone back and forth and close a mill every turn. It’s the strongest pattern in the game.
  • Block their two in a row. When the other player has two stones on a line and the third point is free, put a stone there before they do.
  • Watch out for flying. With three stones left your friend can jump anywhere, so every pair of yours with an open third point is a threat.

Fair play

Every move is checked on our server: placing only while stones are left, moving only along the lines, taking only after a real mill and never a stone in a mill unless all are. If you don’t like flying, switch it off when you start the game.

Nine Men’s Morris FAQ

Can I play Nine Men’s Morris online with a friend for free?

Yes. Start a game on this page, send the link and your friend plays in their browser. Free, no app, no account.

Do we have to play at the same time?

No. Play live if you are both online, or one move at a time whenever you like. The board plays back what happened since your last look.

Can I take a stone that is in a mill?

Only if all of the other player’s stones are in mills. Otherwise you must take one that isn’t.

What is flying?

When a player is down to three stones, their stones may jump to any empty point instead of moving along a line. You can switch it off when you start the game.

When does the game end?

When a player has only two stones, or can’t move. After 50 moves in a row without a mill it’s a draw.

Is this the same as Mühle?

Yes. Mühle, Molino, Jeu du moulin, Dokuz Taş and Nine Men’s Morris are the same game.
