Rock Paper Scissors

The fairest way to settle anything

Who pays for coffee, who picks the film, who takes out the trash: Rock Paper Scissors has settled it for generations. The only problem is that it needs both people in the same room, at the same time, throwing on the same beat. BeatMe fixes that. You lock in your throw, send the link, and your friend locks in theirs whenever they get to it.

Your throw is sealed on the server. Your friend cannot see it, the link preview does not show it, and neither can anyone watching. Only when both throws are in does BeatMe reveal them together, with a proper "Rock… Paper… Scissors… Shoot!" for everyone looking at the screen.

How to play Rock Paper Scissors

Start a match

Type your name, choose best of 3, 5 or 7, and start. Lock in your first throw right away, then send the short beatme.link link.

Lock in your throw

Tap Rock, Paper or Scissors. Once it is locked, it cannot be changed or seen by anyone else.

Reveal together

When both throws are in, they flip at the same moment. Rock crushes scissors, scissors cut paper, paper covers rock. A tie is thrown again.

First to the target wins

Best of 3 is first to 2 wins, best of 5 first to 3, best of 7 first to 4. Rematch on the same link and BeatMe keeps the series score.

Rock Paper Scissors strategy: is there one?

Against a perfectly random player, no strategy wins more than a third of the time. People are not random, though, and that is where it gets interesting:

  • Beginners open with rock. It feels strong. That makes paper a decent first throw against someone new to the game.
  • Winners repeat, losers switch. Many players stick with a throw that just won, and move on from one that just lost, often to the throw that would have beaten it.
  • Nobody likes a third of the same. After two of the same throw in a row, most people avoid a third. Use that to rule one option out.
  • Scissors is thrown least. Studies of casual players find scissors is the least common pick, which makes rock a little less useful than it feels.
  • When in doubt, be random. If your opponent is reading you, the only defence is to stop having patterns.

Why play Rock Paper Scissors on BeatMe?

Online, the hard part of Rock Paper Scissors is trust: whoever throws second could simply wait and react. On BeatMe, a locked throw stays on the server until both are in, so the reveal is genuinely simultaneous even when you play hours apart. Every match ends with a result card you can post, and the replay shows every throw in order.

Rock Paper Scissors FAQ

Can I play Rock Paper Scissors online with a friend for free?

Yes. Start a match on this page, lock in your throw and send the link. Your friend plays in their browser on any phone, tablet or computer. Free, no app, no account.

Can my friend see my throw before picking?

No. A locked throw never leaves the server until both players have picked. Your friend, the link preview and anyone watching only see that you are ready.

Do we have to play at the same time?

No. Each player throws whenever they like, and the link stays open for 48 hours after the last throw. If you are both online, the reveals happen live.

What happens on a tie?

A tie does not count for either player. You both throw again until someone wins the throw.

What does best of 3, 5 or 7 mean?

It is the length of the match. Best of 3 goes to whoever wins 2 throws first, best of 5 to the first with 3 wins, and best of 7 to the first with 4.

Is Rock Paper Scissors pure luck?

Against a truly random player, yes. Between people it is a game of reading habits: most players fall into patterns, and spotting them is the skill.
