A minefield of raised tiles with numbers, a red flag and a black mine

The old Windows classic, now with a rival

Minesweeper is the puzzle that came with every Windows computer: a grid of covered tiles, a number of hidden mines, and numbers that tell you how many mines touch each square. Open every safe tile without hitting a mine. On your own it is a quiet puzzle. Against a friend on the same field it is a race.

On BeatMe you pick the level, play your field and send the link. Your friend gets the exact same minefield, with the same safe opening, so the only difference is skill and speed. You see each other’s progress while you play, and both fields once you are both done.

How to play Minesweeper Duel

Pick a level

Beginner (9×9, 10 mines), Intermediate (16×16, 40 mines) or Expert (30×16, 99 mines), like the original. Send the beatme.link link.

Open tiles

Tap or click a tile to open it. A number tells you how many mines touch it; an empty tile opens its whole area.

Flag the mines

Right-click, long-press or switch on flag mode to mark a mine. Tap a number whose mines are all flagged to open everything around it.

Fastest clear wins

Clear every safe tile to stop your clock. A clear beats a mine; two clears go to the faster player.

Minesweeper tips

  • A 1 in a corner is a gift. If a 1 touches only one covered tile, that tile is a mine. Flag it.
  • Count down. When a number already has all its mines flagged, every other tile around it is safe.
  • Learn the 1-2-1. Along a wall, the pattern 1-2-1 means the mines are next to the two 1s, not next to the 2.
  • Use chording. Tapping a satisfied number opens all its neighbours at once, the fastest move in the game.
  • Don’t guess early. Guessing costs nothing until it costs everything. Look for a sure tile first.

Fair for both players

The mines stay on our server, so nobody can find them in the page. Both players start from the same safe opening, so there is no first-click luck, and the clock is measured by the server. Your friend’s field stays hidden until you have both finished, because it would show where the mines are.

Minesweeper Duel FAQ

Can I play Minesweeper online against a friend for free?

Yes. Start a game on this page, send the link and your friend plays the same field in their browser. Free, no app, no account.

Do we get the same minefield?

Yes, exactly the same mines and the same safe starting area. The difference is how fast and how carefully you play.

Who wins?

Clearing the field beats hitting a mine. If you both clear it, the faster time wins. If you both hit a mine, whoever opened more of the field wins.

How do I flag a mine on my phone?

Long-press the tile, or switch on flag mode and tap. On a computer, right-click.

What are the levels?

The classic three: Beginner 9×9 with 10 mines, Intermediate 16×16 with 40 mines and Expert 30×16 with 99 mines. On phones the Expert field stands upright so it fits the screen.

Do we have to play at the same time?

No. Each of you plays whenever you like; you can follow the other player’s progress live if you are both online.
